Despite the name ‘sportgeneeskunde’, sports medicine is not only for athletes. Our sports physicians focus on musculoskeletal complaints, regardless of age or level of activity. They aim to promote, safeguard, and restore health, while taking into account individual load and capacity.
Referral
For a consultation with a sports physician, you need a referral from your general practitioner or medical specialist. The waiting time for a consultation is 2 weeks.
You do not need a referral for sports medical examinations, sports screenings, and exercise tests. However, an exercise test with ECG and respiratory gas analysis can also be prescribed by a general practitioner or medical specialist.
During the consultation with the sports physician, a treatment plan is drawn up based on the diagnosis and the cause of the overload. No patient is the same, and no injury is the same; we create a personalized program for everyone.
What makes our center unique is the multidisciplinary collaboration between our sports physicians, movement scientists, and physiotherapists. This means that, within your personal treatment plan, you may see several specialists. They jointly carry out the treatment plan established by the sports physician and share responsibility for our treatment promise: we will continue treating you until you are free of complaints, or until we have clearly identified the cause that prevents this from being the case.
Your personalized treatment plan may consist of the following components:
In the case of exercise-related complaints, we generally examine what happens to the heart and lungs during physical activity. This is done by performing an exercise test with respiratory gas analysis on a bicycle or treadmill (VO₂ max). In this way, we can, for example, detect possible rhythm disorders or abnormalities in oxygen exchange.
Based on the results, we provide advice in the form of tailored training programs, or specific medication may be recommended. In some cases, a referral to a cardiologist or pulmonologist may follow.
Consultations with the sports physician are reimbursed under the basic health insurance, provided you have a referral from your general practitioner or medical specialist. Please note that your deductible and any personal contribution apply. More information about rates and reimbursement can be found on the Rates and Reimbursements page.
It is possible that sports medical examinations, sports screenings, and exercise tests are reimbursed through supplementary insurance. This depends on whether you have supplementary coverage and with which health insurer.
On the website of Sportzorg you can find an overview of all reimbursements per health insurer. If you want to be sure whether you qualify for reimbursement, please check your insurance policy. We are a member of the FSMI and certified by the SCAS.
